Although
I have traveled both abroad and across the US, as a native Californian,
I am affected by the abundance I witness each and every day.
My artwork
was exhibited for a year in the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, (formerly
Chateau Souverain)
and that experience, spending time in Napa and Sonoma counties and
my childhood experience growing up in and around agriculture and
within the almond industry has deeply influenced the way I see and
create art.
My new work,
"not always as it seems"
reflects not only those influences of agriculture but in addition,
my interpretation of that with which people are confronted on a
daily basis in their lives. These paintings then are a metaphor;
much texture, color and imperfection, hidden behind a reflective
and guilded surface. So often, outward appearances are masked
when what actually is beneath the surface is chaos, self-consciousnees,
a troubled life.
Once I am satisfied
with the underlying image, the final exercise of these paintings
is to apply the elegant, fluid, lighter than air leaf of gold or
silver, then revealing only bits and fragments of the underlying
image.
The nature
of this process facilitates the natural metamorphosis of the image
through light it reflects; absorbing color changes in its appearance
throughout the day and glows within its own abilities.
My utilization
of this process mirrors one's own powers of discernment as we become
more aware of a friend or acquaintances actual thoughts and impressions,
rather than that which is merely reflected on the surface.
